EVEREN Securities
In 1995, Tom was part of a small group of management who orchestrated the management-led employee ESOP acquisition of Kemper Securities (renamed EVEREN Securities) from Kemper Corporation for approximately $50 million. After the acquisition, this team had the vision to transform this ‘under-performing’ asset into a superior regional securities powerhouse. Tom personally assumed total responsibility for leading the development of a strong and viable Capital Markets capability. Through the Management Team’s leadership (Tom was one of five Executive Committee members) EVEREN Securities was ultimately transformed, and subsequently sold to Wachovia Corporation for $1.2 billion four years later (1999). The financial success of this transformation was shared by many, as over 80% of the EVEREN employee base participated in the financial gains realized through the ESOP Program management created.
iTRACS Corporation
Tom led the development of iTRACS’ global growth strategy through transformational business development initiatives including acquisition, equity investment, and the incubation of innovative technologies. Tom’s strong commitment to operational excellence, innovative approach to business problems, and aptitude for partnering are reshaping and refining the role of Converged Physical Infrastructure Management™ within the IT infrastructure of Global Fortune 500 organizations. Tom’s leadership realized the transformation of iTRACS into a customer-focused structure, aligned to key industries and geographies. Enabling the company to effectively meet the needs of emerging markets and high-growth industry segments, the organization has realized a significant elevation in business value in the form of financial performance, customer satisfaction and loyalty, market share and productivity.
Drexel Burnham Lambert
During the mid 1980's, Tom was a key member of a small team of Wall Street professionals who developed a creative financial structure that allowed State and local governments to create economic growth capital, in spite of an extremely high and unfavorable interest rate environment. This creative financial structure resulted in creation of approximately $5 billion of attractive capital for economic expansion over a two year period.
Tom is a passionate advocate for the funding of research in support of Juvenile Diabetes, and is a member of the Board of the Illinois Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization singularly focused on finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Tom’s philanthropic commitment is further evidenced in his Chair of the Illinois site of the annual Ron Santo Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes. The walk is the single largest fund-raising event undertaken by JDRF each year. Through Tom’s leadership, the Walk in 2007 and 2008 exceeded its annual budget, and the Illinois JDRF chapter was the largest local chapter in terms of fund-raising for JDRF in the United States. In addition to his work with JDRF, Tom’s charitable activities include active support of the Sunshine Foundation for Handicap Children, Santa Anonymous, Windows of Opportunity, Working in Schools, Mike Dikta Hall of Fame Association, and Catholic Charities.
A committed community leader, Tom’s public service includes a Presidential appointment (1997 – President William J. Clinton) to the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. Shortly after, Tom was appointed Chairman of The Center’s Investment Policy Committee. During Tom’s six year term as Chairman, he orchestrated comprehensive change in investment policy and focus of the Center’s endowment funds. This visionary change in investment strategy resulted in the endowment consistently over achieving its peer group in total return. The additional investment funds, available to the staff of the Woodrow Wilson Center, allowed for an accelerated level of growth for the public purpose vision that Congress originally established when they created the center in 1968 as a living memorial to President Woodrow Wilson. The investment criteria developed under Tom’s leadership remains a guide post for the Center’s continued investment strategy.
